Welcome to Our Workshop in Devon
I'm very lucky to have a beautiful workshop tucked away in the heart of the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, right on the coast here in Devon. It’s peaceful, green, and full of inspiration — and if you're visiting for a course or just stopping by, there’s plenty to explore nearby.
The view of the workshop setting from Burgh Island, a great place to visit during your stay.
Here are a few of my favourite local spots — good food, great walks, pretty villages, and a few surprises.
Views, Villages & Local Life
Burgh Island
One of the best views of our setting is from Burgh Island, just along the coast. It’s well worth a visit while you're in the area — especially at low tide when you can walk the causeway.
Holbeton
To the east is Holbeton, a lovely village with a brilliant little post office and shop. They stock great local produce and most of the basics. If you give Jack a call ahead of time, he might be able to make you up a sandwich for lunch.
Newton Ferrers & Noss Mayo
To the west are the twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, sitting opposite each other on the Yealm Estuary. Newton has a deli, a small selection of shops, and a great café called The Green — a perfect stop for coffee or a bite to eat.
Modbury
A little further east is Modbury, a bustling little town that made headlines as the first in the UK to go plastic bag–free. It has a good mix of independent shops and a nice community feel.
Food & Drink
Farm Shops
If you're coming from the Plymouth direction, Ben’s Farm Shop is a good place to stop and grab lunch. They do organic fruit and veg, pies, salads, chocolate – all the essentials.
Pubs
There are a few proper locals worth checking out:
• The Mildmay Colours in Holbeton
• The Dolphin Inn in Newton Ferrers
Each one’s got its own charm — good for a pint, a chat, and a solid meal.
Ice Cream
About 3 miles from the workshop, on route to Mothecombe is The Surfing Cow, an award-winning ice cream farm. They make everything on site from their own Jersey-cross cows, and it’s as good as it sounds. Visit Surfing Cow
Beaches & Walks
We’re spoilt for choice here. Some favourites within easy reach of the workshop:
• Wadham Rocks – our closest beach, about a 15-minute walk through the fields
• Stoke Beach – a peaceful sandy cove a little further west
• Mothecombe – the busiest beach nearby, with a big car park and an easy walk down to a gorgeous bay
Right next to the car park at Mothecombe is The School House Devon. When I was a child, all you could get there was a sausage roll and a Mars bar. These days it’s got a lovely Mediterranean-style menu, a big outdoor space, and a lively programme of events through the year. Visit School house Devon
