Glade is a group of twenty-eight individually shaped wooden stems, each carrying a small, hand-made wooden shade. Rising from a dark bed of compost, the stems gather loosely like new growth at the edge of a woodland.
The lights are individually controlled, allowing illumination to move gently through the piece. They can emerge one at a time, pass through the group in slow waves, flicker independently like fireflies, or settle into a quiet, continuous glow.
I wanted to make a light that felt less like a conventional object and more like something living.
Each stem is selected, hollowed for the wiring, and composed individually, retaining the slight bends, forks and irregularities of the original willow stem. Rather than imposing a repeated manufactured form, the composition grew gradually as the stems were brought together—some tall and reaching, others held lower within the group.
The small real-wood shades introduce a warm, softened light. When seen closely, the grain remains visible through the thin timber; from a distance, the shades appear as points of light suspended above the stems.
Hidden within the base is a specially developed electronic control system. Each of the twenty-eight lights can be dimmed independently, making it possible to create subtle sequences of movement. The effects have been carefully adjusted so that the light rises and fades gradually, without the harsh switching normally associated with LEDs.
The result sits somewhere between furniture, lighting and sculpture: a changing field of light grounded in the forms and materials of the woodland.

Coppice Light can be commissioned for galleries, public buildings, hotels, restaurants and private interiors.
The number, height and arrangement of the stems can be adapted to suit a particular space. Timber, shade materials, base dimensions and lighting sequences can also be developed as part of the commission.
