Bugle Hole Bench Commission

This type of garden bench I typically make as a community project. The scale of the work lends itself to working with a dedicated team of volunteers. It is physical, but rewarding work. This project however, is a private commission, for a local customer. Made entirely of locally sourced “green” sweet chestnut, and seasoned oak, it is now situated within a private garden overlooking the sea, on the South Devon coast. I was lucky enough to gather all the materials just before the Coronavirus lock-down in March 2020. This journal post shows some of the processes involved in creating a bench like this. The bench is left untreated, and will age gracefully, and become part of the environment. There is no need for any preservatives as both sweet chestnut and oak will last for over 25 years left untreated.
