Rotherfold Day 1

Day one of the Rotherfold Project started with the cleaving of a large sweet chestnut log, which will become the legs and uprights of the two next benches.

Some of the tools of the trade.  Sweet chestnut often spirals - this one was dead straight and cleaved beautifully.  It took the six of us about 2 hours to get to this stage.  Oak is a different kettle of fish!

We began by driving steel wedges in from the top, then chased the split to the centre of the log, then gradually opened it up along its length.

Very minimal tearing.  These pieces will be cleaved again then axed and shaved to their finished shapes.
